The Race That Stops A Nation

Tuesday 2nd November, 2010

Today is the running of the Melbourne Cup.  The whole country stops whatever they are doing at around 2.30pm SA time to watch this horse race.

The race is run over 32oo metres and usually they have 24 horses in the race.  All over the country Melbourne Cup Lunches are held.  We do not have a Public Holiday here, I think they do in Melbourne, but there's not much work done in the afternoon.  This year is the 150th Anniversary of the race and it is always held on the first Tuesday of November.

I don't go to any Lunches anymore.....been there, done that.  I find them quite boring.  I am not that interested in horse racing either but I will watch the race on TV.  For some reason this race seems to capture the imagination of all Aussies.

Tony is going to a Lunch at the Hilton Hotel courtesy of the cleaning company whom he employs to clean the building.  He rang to say the food was terrible.  To start with they got 1 cocktail frankfurt on some rice, next course was 2 prawns on a couple of pieces of fried onion and they were overcooked.  The main course was a choice of mullet or lamb.  The rack of lamb was raw, if the meat was a tiny bit pink he would have accepted it but he said as he cut into it the blood ran out.  Even those who had the mullet said it wasn't cooked properly.  He said the dessert was the best part, a small piece of cake.  Luckily he didn't have to pay.....$119/head.

He had 5 horses in the sweeps and not one winner.....lol.

Well the race has been run and won.  This years winner was Americain.  The horse was born in America, trained by a Frenchman, ridden by a French jockey and owned by Australians.
